How Distance Is Determined

The shortest separation between any two features is the distance between them, in which they are closest to each other. This logic is employed by any geoprocessing tool calculating distance.

Input data in an equidistance projected coordinate system lead to the most accurate distance measurements. Distance may always be computed no matter what coordinate system is used, but the results may not be reliable or even meaningless if the data is in a geographic coordinate system or an incorrectly selected projected coordinate system.

There may be multiple features that are equally closest to another feature. If this occurs, any of the equally closest features can be indiscriminately chosen as the closest. A feature that contains or is contained another feature has a distance of zero. The distance between two features is given as zero if at least one x,y coordinate is shared between them.

Thus, distance is zero when between two overlapping, intersecting, touching or crossing features. Distance is always measured to the boundary of a polygon feature, rather than to the center. As indicated earlier, if a feature is entirely inside a polygon, their distance is zero. The distance that lies between two features of any kind, is always the same no matter which one of them is being measured to and from.

Determining distance relies on the geometry type of the features, and also on other factors such as coordinate system. However, three basic rules dictate how distance will be calculated. First, the distance that lies between two points is the straight line linking the points. Second, distance from one point to one line can be the perpendicular vertex or the closest vertex. Lastly, polyline distances are determined by segment vertices.
