Fight Depression with Change

When it comes to health problems, we don’t always acknowledge, or take seriously, mental health issues. However, mental illness is not only a serious issue on its own, but it also directly impacts physical health. So, it’s time to start taking it seriously. Even those suffering from mental illnesses may not even know it. Because of the stigma placed on mental illnesses and the mentally ill, many sufferers often blame others or themselves for the way they’re feeling, which gradually deteriorates their relationships, which then exacerbates their problems. If you’re suffering from depression, or you think you might be, there are a few ways to alleviate symptoms before you ever see a psychiatrist. (which I do still highly recommend).

Feeling blue

First and foremost, get out of the house. It sounds too easy, but taking a walk and getting exercise have been proven to alleviate the symptoms of depression. On the walking front, the changing scenery is stimulating your mind in a way that being cooped up at home can’t, and it can improve your mood greatly. As for exercise, breaking a sweat and getting the blood pumping releases endorphins, which will improve your mood. On both fronts, physical activity is what we were biologically built for, so it stands to reason that modern man’s inert lifestyle could be a contributing factor to depression.

Another way to combat depression symptoms is simply to make changes at home. Specifically, redecorating can provide a new environment which inspires a new, more positive perspective. Consider adding more color to your living space. Blue, especially, is known to have a calming effect and can boost creativity. When it comes to redecorating, Nordstrom can be a good place to start your search for decor, and many others needs geared toward reinvigorating your life.
